Want to Live to 100? Bring More "Blue" into Your Life!

Does living to 100 or longer sound good to you? In the Netflix series "Blue Zones", researcher Dan Buettner explores the lifestyles of communities around the world where people live measurably longer lives, often reaching 100 years old and beyond while also maintaining strength and vitality. So, what are the key learnings from these Blue Zones, and how can we incorporate their attitudes and behaviors into our own daily lives?

In case you don't have Netflix, here are a few of the key points from the series:

Lesson 1: Move Naturally

One common trait among Blue Zone residents is their inclination towards natural movement. Instead of hitting the gym for grueling workouts, they incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. Whether it's walking to the market, gardening, or simply taking the stairs instead of the elevator, they prioritize movement without even realizing it. So, let's follow suit! Find ways to move naturally throughout your day – take a walk during your lunch break, stretch while watching TV, or dance around the kitchen while cooking dinner.

Lesson 2: Eat Wisely

Another key takeaway from the Blue Zones is their diet. These communities consume primarily plant-based diets, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. They also practice moderation when it comes to meat and dairy, opting for smaller portions and less frequent consumption. I confess this one is pretty daunting to me, as I’m someone who lives on dairy products and loves a good steak!  After watching the series though, I am now revisiting my eating habits and am incorporating more plant-based foods into my diet.

Lesson 3: Cultivate Purpose

Having a sense of purpose is crucial for longevity and well-being. Blue Zone residents often have strong social networks, deep-rooted traditions, and a sense of belonging within their communities. They engage in activities that bring them joy and fulfillment, whether it's tending to their gardens, volunteering, or participating in religious ceremonies. So, let's take a page from their book and cultivate purpose in our own lives. Find activities that bring meaning and fulfillment, connect with others who share your interests, and contribute to something greater than yourself!

Lesson 4: Prioritize Rest and Relaxation

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook the importance of rest and relaxation. But in the Blue Zones, residents prioritize downtime and stress-relief activities like napping, socializing, and spending time in nature. They understand the importance of slowing down and giving their bodies and minds the rest they need to thrive. So, let's make rest and relaxation a priority in our own lives. Set aside time each day to unwind and recharge, whether it's through meditation, reading, or simply enjoying a quiet moment alone.

"Blue Zones" offers valuable insights into the habits and attitudes of communities where people live longer, healthier lives. By incorporating lessons from these Blue Zones into our daily lives – moving naturally, eating wisely, cultivating purpose, prioritizing rest and relaxation, and fostering strong social connections – we can increase our chances of living longer, happier, and more fulfilling lives. So, let's embrace these lessons and start reaping the benefits of a Blue Zone-inspired lifestyle today!
